When it comes to supplies I have made all the mistakes for you so you don’t have to. 🙂 I have tested and used many sharpening stones and supplies over the years and here is my recommendation for the best supplies for your money.

I believe the buy once cry once. Buy the best quality tools you can afford and you will thank yourself later. I don’t know how many times I have tried to “save money” just to end up spending the money a second time to buy the right tools. I think for someone starting out you can’t beat the King 1000 and 6000 stones. I recommend buying separate stones, in the long run it is the most economical way. However if you are really trying to pinch pennies the 1000/6000 combination stone the next best thing. Here are links to those stones and more.

Blade Oil

This is my preferred blade oil for my knives, it is food safe and last a long time. Simply apply a few drops onto a paper towel. Then wipe your knives down with said paper towel, a little goes a long ways.

Atoma 140 Diamond Plate for flattening stones

This stone makes fast work of keeping your stones flat and working well. It is expensive but will last a super long time.

Sharpening Stone Holder

I have a few of these stone holders and they are really nice. I have one for each stone that needs it. They do tend to rust a little over time but that hasn’t been a problem for me.
